I snuck this one in on the way back to Edinburgh from a family trip down south. Two weekends away without bagging anything but I was determined to sneak something in
I even persuaded the missus that this would not only be quick, but easy as well, and so she joined the lads and me in bagging this one
There seems to be some confusion as to the exact location of the true summit. Some have it on the east side, including, it seems, the OS. Others and my GPS app put it to the west near the remains of the Iron Age Habchester Fort. Googling seemed to confirm the latter, so I went with that.
A short way over the border, we turned off the A1 and headed up the minor road over Lamberton Moor. We parked on a wide bit of grass verge next to a strip of trees, about 400m north-west of the summit. Walking about 100m back down the road, we entered a cow field via a gate. From there we walked roughly south-west up towards the top.
- Curious cows
The exact point of the summit was difficult to judge visually, but after walking around a bit and checking the GPS it seems we hit it.
- View south to the Cheviots
- Looking north-west
- The North Sea
- Looking over to the other summit, supposedly 1m lower
We went over to see the banks of earth that mark the remains of the fort.
Then made our way back to the gate and the road - watching our step for cow pats!
We met some pigs in the field across the road.
All in all, better than any service station stop!
