I had these hills in my draft folder for a while and decided early on that it would involve a camp at the head of the Lochan.
I set off from Ayrshire just after 6pm and arrived at the car park on the A86 at 10pm, it took a further hour to cycle into my camp spot at the lochan but with it being mid-summer I didn't need to use a head torch.
- 10:45pm
I set off from my camp early and headed over the dry bog (we'd had over a month with very little rain), even though it was dry it was still tough going with plenty of haggis traps, it took me 2 hours to reach the bottom of the climb at 700m.
- Camp Spot
Unless unavoidable, the one thing I hate doing is retracing my steps to come back off a hill, I'd looked at the maps of the area and realised it could be done in a round, especially round the corrie on Beinn a' Chlachair.
- The route up Beinn a' Chlachair
Once out of the bog the climb up through the crags is great, it's an easy scramble and you gain height quickly, the views over the Meagaidh range to the north are fantastic, before you know it you're topping out on Beinn a' Chlachair at 1087m.
- Easy climb through the crags
The route from Beinn a' Chlachair largely follows the WH route over to the other 2 munros, the one thing I'd say about it is that the descent to Bealach Leamhain is steep, the path is very faint so if you lose it don't panic, there are no nasty surprises or big drops ahead, just make your own way down.
- Laggan round route
At the time of writing this report the WH website wouldn't allow me to upload the GPX file, here is a link to my route on the OS website where the file can be downloaded:
