Just got back from a weekend in Wasdale with a friend from work.
We arrived on Friday at around lunchtime so started with a pint and a burger and chips at The Strands in Nether Wasdale to see if the rain would go off. It did
After lunch we dropped one car at the south west end of the lake and took the other on to the car park at Wasdale Head. From there the track is easy to follow. The first couple of hundred yards is the path up to Scafell Pike via Brown Tongue but there is an obvious split in the path heading right towards the woods at the back of Wasdale Head Hall. The path at the back of the woods is currently under repair so if you are going up there soon take care when navigating your way around the JCB.
The path to Illgill Head gives great views of Wast Water and the fells to the north and south as well as the big boys behind you. Unfortunately, the higher peaks around the Scafell range were shrouded in mist for most of the afternoon but the route up Illgill Head is a great place to get a sence of the scale of this beautiful place.
Once on the top there is an obvious path to Whin Rigg which skirts along the top of the screes on the north east side of the ridge. There are some great views down the steep gullies to Wast Water for those brave enough to step out to the edge.
The descent to Easthwaite Farm is steep but easy to follow. This was a nice walk to start the weekend and can easily be made longer by simply having one car so that you need to walk back along the length of the lake.
