Monamenach from Auchavan in Glen Isla with Kids (10, 13 y/o)Hill no. 179 - Corbett no. 33Our plan for the day was to climb two Corbetts that are relatively close to each other:
1.
Ben Gulabin2. Monamenach
Since each hill has its own WH walk, I wrote a report for each hill separately.
2. MonamenachWe more or less followed the WH walk
Monamenach, Glen Isla. There are tracks and a path to the summit.
Stats:Total distance - 5.5 km
Total time - 2h50m
Altitude gain - 450 m
Map of our route:Elevation profile of our route:|We parked in a small parking area by the river Isla near the bridge in Auchavan. There is space roughly for 4-5 cars.
- Parking area by the river Isla.
However, the WH route starts at a different place. This parking area is about 150 m closer to the bridge than the place where the WH route starts and from here it is easier to follow the green route as marked in the picture below which we walked on the way back.
- Alternative green route from the parking area.
Anyway, since we followed the WH walk at the start we returned first to Auchavan on a heavily pot-holed road and there we followed the track to Tulchan Lodge. We turned left from this track behind the cattle grid.
- The place where we turned off the track.
- Track up.
- Looking back towards the parking area.
Red line - way up.
Green line - our way down and alternative route.
- Dalhally, river Isla.
- Auchavan, river Isla.
- Crossing Glack Burn.
- Rainbow over Glen Isla.
- Looking back at the track.
We left the track in the bealach and continued to the summit along the grassy track.
- The place where the grassy track to the summit starts.
- Summit cairn on the top of Monamenach.
- Conni on the top, looking SSW towards Graham Mount Blair.
It was quite windy at the top, it started raining and it was also late, so we did not stay there long and soon headed back to the car.
- Heading down the grassy track.
We returned the same way, just the last few hundred meters we took a different route (as I described above).
