With the forecast for high winds and snow showers on the peaks I decided to keep relatively low and head for the Angus Glens. Glen Esk it was. I've visited Loch Lee a couple of times before but both times in poor weather and excellent reports from malky_c, foggieclimber & more recently ChrisW spurred me on.
So up early, a bit less than an hours drive (somehow managing to avoid collecting suicidal wildlife on my recently mended bumper) and I was on my way just after 7am. Weather was pretty good if windy along the exposed loch-side. My route was as per the walk detailed on this site with the addition of a diversion to bag Hunt Hill. I'd gone all of 2010 without bagging a Graham so it was about time I put that to rights.
Really enjoyed my day. The two waterfalls were great. Unfortunately I didn't get great shots of these due to the bright light/high contrast conditions. I might be able to rescue a few more shots with a bit more PhotoShop work so I'll post these later if I succeed.
The Water of Unich gorge is grand (& it was also sheltered from the wind). There was a fresh exposure of mica schist (a type of rock that is fairly common around the Cairngorms) that made parts of the path sparkle. I even took a small piece home. I only got rained on properly once when topping Hunt Hill - btw the wee cairn isn't at the true summit
The wind on the tops was hardly any stronger than down in the glen so that was a real bonus. There was quite a storm over Lochnagar and I latter confirmed from someone at work that it did indeed snow up there. Hunt Hill isn't much but the views from it, Craig Maskeldie and coming down the Shank Of Inchgrundle are superb.
And the wildlife is great this time of year. Two new spots for me: a Ring Ouzel & a Wheatear. There were also Sand Pipers, Oyster Catchers, Spotted Flycatchers, Greater Spotted Woodpeckers and my best view yet of a pair Woodcocks that were sat by the side of the road as I drove home. Had time to stop the car, reverse & wind down the window. They flew off just as I was getting my camera switched on.
All in all highly recommended

Holding Back....Every time I see this abandon church & graveyard I always wonder why they put it so close to the loch shore. But I guess the addition of the weir at the end of the loch raised the level few feet. Anyway it seems to be doing the job as it must take a real battering during winter storms, not to mention freezing of the loch.
