We walked this route yesterday in perfect, sunny weather. The return from Creag an Dail Bheag is not a pleasant one. Walking along the the pathless section following the dry stone wall is not too bad, although undulating, rock strewn, with heather hiding the rocks for lots of the way.
Once crossing the fence line, the fun begins. Not so much fun.
Firstly, it is steep.
Secondly, the small rocks create an avalanche of rocks if you are not careful.
Thirdly, once you get through the worst part of the avalanching rocks, the heather is ever present. It varies in height, but often thigh height.
Now,I like heather.
It’s the ankle breaking rocks and knee breaking holes you can step into that I’m not a fan of.
Whilst we could easily see our goal (the lovely flat road we walled in on) in the distance, getting to it is a VERY slow process.
Each step is tricky.
At times, a deer track can be found for a few metres, however these soon disappear.
We meandered down to the burn eventually. Following this was also not an easy task. Sudden drops and high grass, heather and water to contend with.
We wholeheartedly recommend returning by retracing your steps back to that fine road you have walked in on.
Obviously the terrain has changed since the initial walk report.
And we had perfect weather: sun, little wind, no clouds, lots of light and time. I can’t imagine how awful this route would become in the rain!
