Having noted the reports of unavoidable rotten tussock trodding in the northern approach, and aiming only for the Fiona on this day with limited time, I found a brief report elsewhere of an approach from the North. By car from Newton Stewart up the road to Auchinleck Farm, turn right onto forestry tracks and head, bearing right, up to the top and round a bit to where there is a wide break in the forestry NX435756. Out of the trees you can pick from many options, up gentle slopes and around to Lamachan Hill. Just over 2 hours all told out and back. Being an unusual route it was, predictably, pretty vacant. Nice conditions too, a fine day to add to my holidays in the sun.

I’ve read another review which starts at the same point on the forest track. Does anyone know if the track is suitable for a small car (i.e. not an off road vehicle!) and if non-forestry vehicles are actually permitted on the track?
