Broad Law - a different route

I always leave the car at the parking area at NT144201 just to the east of the bridge and walk the few hundred metres to The Megget Stone. Followed the usual route to Broad Law, which as usual was misty, and could just see the air traffic control beacon. (all this hill furniture!) From here walked north west over Brown Knowe to Great Knock, which has good views west over Tweed Valley spoiled only by an insensitively placed wind farm in Benshaw Hill/Middle Head area. (11 turbines just being commissioned - yet more hill furniture!). These will also be very obvious from Culter Fell - who ever gave permission for this development has no idea of the need to preserve the scenic beauty of this area.


There are 2 cairns on Great Knock, the lower one was an ideal spot for lunch.

Returned to Broad Law, started to return south and then turned south east over Porridge Cairn and on to Wylies Hill, came off the nose of this hill, which was probably a mistake: it is steep loose scree mixed with heather. The sun was now out briefly and the light westerly breeze had fallen away, my slow progress down hill allowing the midges to have a good feed. This walk concluded with a brisk 1.5 km walk up past the Megget Stone. Despite reasonable weather saw no other walker all day.

I saw this windfarm fom Dollar Law a few months ago and was similarly displeased. Broad Law is a hill I must re-visit with a route to do it justice.
