There are a few mountains which cling onto a fearful reputation and the Aonach Eagach is one of them. For years I have simply looked up in awe and was far to afraid to ever attempt that ride walk. Well until the day I found the secret recipe…
The Aonach Eagach
Ingredients:
100g of courage
100g of madness
1-6 glasses of wine
1 chicken
1 pair of trousers (chopped in summer)
1 top
1 pair of walking boots
1 rucksack
3 litres of water
Food to taste
Preperations:
Whisk the courage and madness together in a small bowl, stir for 5 min. Add the red wine and let it simmer until the mix is dissolved. Take the chicken and cut its wings (you don’t want a case of chicken out)
Take the trousers, top and walking boots and put them on in a warm place, toss the water and food in the rucksack and drive to Glen Coe.
Directions:
Park close to Allt-na-reigh,take the mix and make your way up to the Chancellor, time taken 1.5h. Chill. Now walk the ridge ….if you haven’t stirred the courage and madness together long enough, there might be the chance of some ‘brown pant syndrome’ but that should pass after the final crazy pinnacle. Now take it easy walk down the ridge and celebrate with a pint –or a few.
Nutritional Information:
Calories burned due to fear: ~1000

- Half way up looking towards Binneam
- The Chancellor
- The Ridge towards the North
- Getting down that rock face (see the person in the blue top) was the most scary part, as it was wet and slimy and pretty hard going...(for myself anyway)
- The Ridge looking towards the South
- Me after the worst was over...looking rather dirty from clinging to the wet rock for dear life ;-)
