One of the reasons I joined Walk Highlands was to report this short and relatively straightforward walk. The route starting from the Megget Stone is as for Broad Law until NT144214 (on the 700m contour) where there is a cairn to the west, on the other side of the fence. Go west past the cairn and down to a saddle, from there it an easy climb NW up to the narrow top of Talla Cleuch Head, which is unnamed on Landranger72. From here it is a short walk NW down to Mathieside Cairn which has some shelter for a lunchbreak.

I returned by reversing the above route.

This part of the Borders is great walking country but does have the drawback of suffering from over flying aircraft, both high and low level, which can detract from the wildness and ambience of these hills. However, the eagle-eyed among you might notice the date of this walk was Ashcloud Saturday, when all aircraft were grounded and the hills returned to their silent best. You could easily imagine that you were back in pre-industrial days, such was the silence of the hills. There was a keen, cool westerly breeze blowing and patches of snow on the nearby slopes of Broad Law, nevertheless I dawdled just to delight in the enveloping joy of silence.
