Walkhighlands

It took me 9 hours to do this walk. Not because I’m a slow walker but because the views were so stunning I had to stop every 3 minutes to take yet another photograph! In a week of utterly miserable weather, this was the one glorious day of sunshine.
I parked at the busy Coire Mhic Fhearchair carpark and walked along the road to the start of the walk at Coire an Laoigh. The path up to the ridge was steep, but nowhere near as daunting as it had looked from the road. By the time I reached the cairn between Stuc Coire an Laoigh and Beinn Eighe I was all out of puff and stopped to catch my breath and take a few hundred photos of the stunning view of Liathach that just appeared. After a cup of coffee (I won’t go anywhere without coffee!) I continued up to the ridge and on to Spidean Coire nan Clach. The views all around were absolutely stunning. Back down and a fantastic walk along the ridge to Coinneach Mhor.
After a lunch break and a zillion more photos it was down and along to Ruadh-Stac Mhor.

By this point all the other folk on the hill had passed by and I had the whole place to myself. I was enjoying the sunshine, the solitude and the views far too much to leave but eventually I headed back down to the bealach and the scree chute. I don’t like scree – I much prefer the ground to stay where it is when I’m walking on it, thank you! However, by staying as far over on the right hand side as possible I managed to avoid most of it. The Triple Buttresses looked very impressive particularly from the far side of the lochan where they were reflected in the still water. It was now quite late in the day so from this point on I pretty much just hauled ass on out of there, although I couldn’t resist stopping for more photos along the way! The sun was just setting by the time I got back to the car park and at this point I was now very glad I’d decided to park here and didn’t have a 2km walk along the road after such a long walk out!
All in all, a fantastic day out, I can’t wait to come back and try Liathach!

Trouble with this site now is that things go off the radar so quickly. To read, appreciate and comment on all the great reports on here would be a round the clock job. I would have to resign from my job, get divorced and live in a cupboard chained to my computer.

I missed this until Gareth and the guys at Webtogs had the good sense to name it as walk of the month for September, putting it firmly back on the radar.

Living in Scotland can be grim sometimes - going to work in November in the pouring rain and pitch dark. Coming home from work in January in the pouring rain and pitch dark. Landscape like this is the other side of the coin! This is what makes Scotland one of the most fantastic little countries in the world!

That Thursday was fantastic. I was lucky enough to be on Beinn Dearg near Ullapool that day and also had a marvellous nine hour day on the four munro round.
