Having posted our accents of Dun da Ghoaithe and Ben Talaidh I thought I'd share our walk up Ben More during the same sun soaked week on the delightful Isle of Mull. We had climbed Ben More on our previous visit to Mull four years ago when Grace, aged just five back then, surprised everybody including her parents by making it all the way to the top and back without a piggy back (good job 'cause I was knackerd
).
It wasn't just Grace's first Munro but Mam and Dads to!
- The happy summitters back in 2007
The weather back then was great with cloud coming and going at the top and far ranging views. I also remember the slightly surreal sight of a jet fighter rocketing past 100's of feet below us in the glen. All in all it was a great introduction to climbing munros.
If it had been a fine day in 2007 it was perfection in 2011. A cloudless azure sky stretched on for miles and miles with barely any haze whatsoever. It's a pity cameras pick up more haze than the human eye because not even the shots I took did justice to a truly majestic day.
Anyhow, the route from Dhiseig is as straightforward as you can get for a munro from sea level. A bit boggy in places lower down and a bit loose and steep higher up but on the whole a good day out for those who don't have the bottle (or have a child in tow) for the A'Chioch ridge.
- Griburn from the start of the walk
- Day glow sheep (yes they really were orange!)
- Views opening up as hight is gained
A highlight of this walk in the first sighting of A'Chioch as you near the summit.
- A'Chioch
If the view from the top had been amazing four years ago it left me speechless on this day. To have such a warm day with so little haze must be rare even for the highlands of Scotland.
- Looking East from the summit
- Isle of Arran 65 miles distant
- Looking back along the summit ridge
- Towards the Ross of Mull
- Happy summitters in 2011
- Tad the dog taking in the views
Above is a picture of Tad the dog. He's now a veteran of 10 munros and has climbed Ben More twice.
- reluctantly heading down
It's hard to see on this shot but on the far right of the horizon you can just see what I think are Ben Mhor and Hecla on South Uist over 80 miles away. I wish I rememberd to put my telephoto lens on the camera to get a better shot but I was to gob-smacked to think clearly.
- Hughie off for a drink.
Thirsty work on a hot day!
- Loch Na keel
So it was back to the shores of Loch na keel for a well earned paddle to cool off hot feet.
A unforgettable day.
