First ridge walk - and I was hooked!

Andrew and David asked Moira and me if we'd like to tag along to walk half of the South Glen Shiel ridge with them. We said we would! We took two cars and left one half way up the glen to avoid a road walk when we came off the ridge. We followed the old road that starts just east of the Cluanie Inn going south east for about 6km before picking up the stalkers path heading west then north west up Creag a'Mhaim.

The amazing thing about this Saturday in July with perfect weather was that we only met one other pair of walkers all day! :D

This was my first ridge walk. Given the perfect weather (warm but not too hot with a pleasant breeze), fabulous views all round and the sheer exhileration of walking a ridge like that, I found it a mind blowingly wonderful experience and was totally hooked from that day on!

I don't remember which summit this was but am guessing it's Aonach air Chrith, with Ben Nevis visible above Spidean Mialach

The descent was down the north east ridge, the Drum Coire nan Eirecheanach which I don't remember presenting any difficulties. We picked up the car and drove back the short distance to the Cluanie Inn where we had a most enjoyable meal. :D

I forgot to take a pic of the ridge that day but here's one from A'Chralaig taken earlier in the year when there was still snow about.

And because I didn't have the dogs on the South Glen Shiel ridge here's a pic for those who like a dog fix!

I think it's worth waiting for a good day. We did the other half of the ridge with a bunch of friends in cloud and rain. :o Still enjoyed it and had a good laugh but got no views at all!

Another fine report Dogplodder and good to see the dogs even though they missed out, but where's the horse? :D

About the only view we got the day we did the second half of the ridge was this one of Loch Quoich. Higher up we were in cloud and could see very little. :? Although there were only 3 munros involved I found it a more challenging day than the first 4 and wonder how much of that was down to the weather! :D

Some great pictures...especially P7310015.JPG where you get some sense of the scale of the ridge walk :D

I tell a lie. One of the group when we did the west end of the ridge in 2006 took this photo with sun shining clearly at the top. Just shows how selective and unreliable memory can be!

Brilliant pics dogplodder! This was also my first ridge in 1987, when 'ah wiz a lass' and I still remember it for being wonderful, albeit in wintery conditions! It is certainly one I'd do again any day :)
