Monamenach. An odd name for a hill me thinks? It's a Corbett in one of the finest of the Angus Glens, Glen Isla.

As usual these days, we were out for a weekend in the Cairngorms and fancied a wander over a few hills we'd never been up.

We headed through Glen Isla, and parked up at Auchavan at the road end. Parking is very limited here and it is a tight single track. Enough room just to tuck the Camel on the verge.



Looking back down the Glen, it was a fairly gloomy looking start.



A good track winds its way up the hillside at the back of the (holiday) cottages, and a short grunt up the hillside took us to a sparse looking summit.



Not bad views though, and improved as the day went on.



A chink in the clouds indicated an improving situation.



And almost immediately, the clouds started to break. Cracking views towards Caenlochan.



With conditions improving, we decided to make a day of it, heading north then down towards Tulchan Lodge.



Where there is a handy bridge at around 182 723. This leads to a land rover track which passes the lodge. The lodge is hidden in the woods and ignore the 'Private' signs. The track goes nowhere near the big hoose.

It is a fine glen, and Caenlochan Glen is quite something as well.

This hill is a braw short walk, good bet under snow.

I like the letterbox shaped photos. This acts as useful reconnaissance for when I head off this way. Thank you for posting.

The hill names in this area are a right mixture of Scots, Gaelic and Anglicised Gaelic. Monamenach is (according to the Scottish Hill Names book) from the Gaelic monadh meadhonach (middle hill).

(For future reference, there is more parking space by the river about 200m past the farm at Auchavan, down a rough track on the right!).

For the geeks out there (like me!) they're taken with a film camera, a Hasselblad Xpan. It's a panoramic camera which takes a double width frame shot. You get 21 shots from a 36 roll 35mm film.
