Continuing our weekend trip up the Cairngorms, we headed towards Braemar to walk the fine wee hill, Creag Bhalg. Classified as a 'Graham' and with a fairly high start, this provides an excellent viewpoint for the big tops of the Cairngorms.

We left Glen Isla and passed through some idyllic wee settlements.

Image

It was late afternoon as we headed up Glen Shee. I must say not one of my favourite Glens, but did look great today.

Image

With the old Camel almost overheating on the climb up to the pass, we stopped to let her cool down and shared a wee beer with Mr Wainwright.

Image

Not many tourists enjoying The Ski Centre. Carn Aosda looked good though.

Image

We stayed at Invercauld (a CC site) and next morning headed up towards the Linn of Quoich, parking 4km or so to the east.

Image

A good forestry track leads through the woods and out into open heather and scattered pine.

Image

Fine views down to Inverey across the water.

Image

More fine pines along the way.

Image

In no time, we were on the top of the hill. A few cairns and shelters. Great views towards the Cairngorms.

Image

Looking to Beinn a Bhuird over the shoulder of Carn an Droichaide.

Image

And as we descended, it was like looking over the Scottish 'serengeti'. Stunning looking west.

Image

And back looking again over to Inverey.

Following the track back to the start.

Love the pic of Glenshee - a good photo can tell a thousand lies . Don't know if it's the ski cr@p or the roadside "camping", but it is not my favourite either. Always enjoy your reports of some of the north east's "other" hills.

Ditto the pic - you can imagine those cloud shadows rolling across the landscape. No doubt the Wainwright bronze is at least as much fun for a beer with as the man himself 8)
