I appologise for this, the spelling and the lack of pictures.but I have to write a wee bit about one of the more splendid hills I have walked.
I left the grey scheme of viewpark with the words of my good lady take your camera still ringing in my ears(dont want to until your better love bad back she has sore yin fell down the stairs) I replied. wish she reminded me of insect repellent ,sun oil compass and money 4 diesel
Anyway dropped of daughter at school and of I went down the m74 making good time and cursing the wind turbines( how much tourism will they lose scotland).
moffat has always been a lovely town but I can never find the toilet
So I head along the old road to selkirk happy that it was not suitable 4 hgvs 3miles down and i have nearly been crushed and ran of the road by 2 hgvs and a logger they must have been lost
.no really it is a great wee road I loved the views and the fact I was right down the glen with hartfell and white coomb towering on left and crofthead ,capel fell and andrewhinney towering to the right.
I came to the car park on the left nt owned and lots of info about the greymares tail and the coomb. boots on and away I went ,before I crossed the bridge over the burn and the prehistoric site I took time to admire the waterfall .Then the peace was exploded by three fighter jets manouvering down the glen at amazing speeds sound barriers well broken they boys can fly a sight and a half. The well maintained path ascends steeply and you quickly gain height the views of the falls getting better until at the top of the falls (Itake a breath and adjust my vertigo(recent thing due to eye injury) it opens into a valley the path follows the burn and a pleasant walk on a good path up to the beautiful loch skeen (if you cross the burn earlier you can go directly up the crags to white coomb.).the sun decided to vapourise the clouds and lit up the shimmering loch as I crossed the burn at the start of the loch heading for a steep narrow ridge from there I followed faint path to firthy brig and onto lochcraighead the views of the broad law and the southern uplands opening up and forming what i can only describe as a immense bumpy blanket of rounded summits (sorry).
retracing my steps to firthy brig then followed the fence on a gentle grassy slope to donald's cluech head and onto
firthhope rig by now the solway firth if i remember right was in view but my mind was now on the flashing white rear of a young dear bolting away from me onwards to white coomb on the grassy slopes I went not a care no insecticide no sun oil no hat doh!!!!!!!!!!!! then the deer came into view again startled by a belgian coming up from the crags looking at both of us for mins she then bolted onto the summit past the cairn and on (camera doh!)Had a coffee with the belgian sorry we never shared names just stated where we came from dont know why,He was a good guy but so we had a crack ,and parted .For some mental reason I decided not to follow my route and walked towards carafran gans a great wee walk on grassy slopes but with a sheer drop on right I followed or should I say clung to the fence 757 meters decent on a hairy slope great direct route down near the bottom was a sheep fold with info boards I made a bline for these and cut through newly planted woods looking onto rotten bottom i read about the great forests that were here and the hunters who walked them and the new plantation and nesting birds great day
I made my way back along the rd several km to the car park sun beating down lambs frolicking no sun cream, beautifull glen.
