Take the faint path to the right off the top heading in the direction of Birkenshaw Reservoir. DO NOT GO DOWN THE PATH INFRONT OF THE TRIG POINT THIS IS THE WRONG WAY.

IMG_0109.JPG
The path becomes clearer as you head down.

IMG_0116.JPG
The Birkenshaw Reservoir should be in front of you as you descend.

IMG_0118.JPG
The path leads you to this break in the trees to enter the forest tp continue the descent. It gets incredibly boggy in here.

IMG_0121.JPG
As you descend in the forest you'll soon come across the first of two ditches which need to be crossed. This is the first, the second can be seen just behind it with the sleeper going over it.

IMG_0122.JPG
Once you've crossed the 2nd ditch turn immediately left into a fire break

IMG_0124.JPG
The fire break is about 300 meters long narrowing as you descend

IMG_0126.JPG
About two thirds of the way down the fire break, you'll come across felled trees. Unfortunately this has got worse recently and is like this for the remaindeer of the fire break. Just try and pick a way through on switching between both sides of the fire break to get down but keep the fire break in view as it takes you to the point which meets the forrestry path again.

IMG_0127.JPG
When you finally get past all the felled trees in the firebreak, you'll come out here. Cross over the stream and re-join the forestry path.

Exiting the firebreak.

IMG_0131.JPG
Continue to descend on the more well defined forestrly path

IMG_0137.JPG
As you descend keep left when you see this junction

IMG_0138.JPG
At the next junction turn right

IMG_0144.JPG
Continue down and before long a path appears on the left hand side (This is the path mentioned in first report and takes you along the front of the Little Bin and will eventually take you back to about halfway up the ascent route) so just ignore it and keep heading down

IMG_0145.JPG
Before long you'll arrive at this fork in the road. Take the left hand path and head over the bridge.

IMG_0146.JPG
Walk over the bridge and follow the path down as it meanders, initially through the forest and eventually along the side of the reservoir

IMG_0155.JPG
Follow the path along the side of the reservoir

IMG_0160.JPG
It's very picturesque, with some great views over to the Fintry Hills

IMG_0162.JPG
You get some nice views of Dungoil as you walk

IMG_0167.JPG
You'll eventually come to another junction, go right at this point and rejoin the ascent path.

IMG_0170.JPG
Now you're back on the ascent path, cross the bridge and retrace your steps back to Todholes carpark.

Stuart, Today I was up Meikle Bin and followed your route to the footstep. It is a good challenging walk and extremely interesting coming down through that firebreak. Is there by any chance another firebreak that would be easier. Anyway thanks for posting that route and making it more than just a forest walk.

Hi ExpatEddie,

Thanks for that, glad it was of use. I see people going up and down the same way all the time and to my mind thats not what the Meikle Bins all about. The firebreaks a bit of a nightmare but you can continue down from the second sleeper instead of going through the firebreak to a burn and follow that down for 300mtrs but it makes finding the path a little trickier :? ..............thats why I stuck with the firebreak option...............takes you to where you want to be as you now know:) Thanks again for the feedback, at least we both now know it works!!! :D
