Tolmount and Tom Buidhe via Loch Callater

A decent walk through Glen Callater to the Loch, once at the Loch we took the low path to the right of the Loch as you look towards Tolmount as we ‘missed’ the low path to the left. Pleasant way and spotted a large herd of deer on higher grounds.
After the loch there was a path (difficult to spot in places) heading towards Tolmount. We took Jocks Road up the least steep part of the initial ascent, again no real path at times so picked our way up fairly easily. Fantastic view back down to the Loch from the top of the first part of the ascent. From here it was a straightforward walk up a narrow path to the summit of Tolmount. A stop for some food here, and a chance to look around at the other peaks surrounding us. Amazingly a few flakes of snow as we ate, but came to nothing.
The walk to Tom Buidhe was easy enough, off to the right of the peak to cross over from Tolmount then up the fairly gentle slope to the summit.
From here we tracked back down then across towards Loch Kander – we took a careful path through the mostly wet grass/heather. To our amazement we spotted an Otter on the ‘side’ of Carn of Claisse – was about 5m from us, gave us a look over then headed away. Shame I missed a photo opportunity

We picked up a path near to Loch Kander and followed it around the ridge back down to Loch Callater. Then a straightforward walk back to the car park. Overall a decent walk with some nice scenery and, for us, a lot of wild life (otter, deer, frogs, a nesting grouse).
