We set off from Ullapool to climb Canisp, a hill we have passed many time on our way north. The last time we attempted was in early May when the snow was thick on the summits of all around.
I had read reports of the ascent up Canisp and had been somewhat disparaging about the complaints of worrying about twisted ankles etc. However, once we had crossed the footbridge and got into the walk proper fully understood those comments. If we had taken the higher ridge to the left the ground underfoot would have been less tiring. As it was the ascent was one of the worst I have come across as it requited total concentration due to the uneven terrain. I did find it difficult to see the 'line of cairns..' mentioned in some reviews. It was a pleasant surprise to reach the top so quickly, as is so often a false summit, but no we were there.
The weather had been fine and clear up until this point when cloud began to descend over Suilven.Fortunately she is our most photographed summit form all angles so not too disappointing. We seem to take a more pleasant route down and delighted to find a flat bed of rock which added interest to an otherwise tedious day out.
