Walkhighlands

I stayed at the Ballater campsite after my work’s summer outing and went to Spittal of Glenshee ready to start walking at 7.30. I left the Dalmunzie hotel and followed the old railway line to Glenlochsie lodge.
As I was about to rejoin the landrover track, I spotted a big bird of prey which looked like an osprey since it had a light underside but I’m not 100% sure whether it was or not.
The track was easy to follow up to Glas Tulaichean and the cloud started to lift when I reached the top. I decended the grassy slopes to rejoin the path which leads to Carn an Righ.
It was very sunny and warm in the sheltered glens and I was glad of the breeze to cool me down when I reached the top. I had my lunch at the top surrounded by fantastic views and some pipits and wheatears were flying about.
I went back down from Carn an Righ and followed a good stalkers path towards Beinn Iutharn Mhor. There were good views of the Cairngorms from the summit and Beinn a Ghlo.
When I was coming back down, lots of red deer were running across the hillside and they seemed to just keep coming! Eventually some of them spotted me and they went off in the other direction.
Throughout the walk I saw lots of mountain hare, ptarmigan and grouse – I think Glenshee is probably one of the best places I have walked for seeing wildlife.
From Beinn Iutharn Mhor I went down to Loch nan Eun, past the waterfalls and then had the long walk back through Glen Taitneach in the sunshine back to the car park.

Good photos, they were moving pretty fast when I tried to get my pictures. I head a few distant gunshots when I was heading over to Beinn Iutharn Mhor so there must have been some shooting going on further away.

We attempted these three in thigh deep snow and only got to the summit of Glas Tulaichean before heading back.

Really strange seeing it in the summer!!!

Heading back on Tuesday to do this walk, hopefully with the same weather as you.

Thanks, it was a really good day out and I only met a couple of people all day. It's always good to have such a beautiful location to yourself.

Done Glas Tulaichean twice but still have the other two to do so this report is really useful to me - thanks!

Did these three anti-clockwise yesterday in fabulous, cold and snowy conditions. Top tip - it's possible to cycle about 10km up the glen - leave bike by the track at the bottom of Creag Dallaig (1 hr).

Lots of black ice covered by 1" fresh powder en route up to Loch nan Eun. Then carried straight on and took the shoulder around Mam nan Carn (tight deep snow in places), down to the saddle and up to Beinn Iutharn Mhor (3 hrs). Back owards the saddle then followed the burn down then up Carn an Righ (4 hrs).

Then off down the shoulder and straight up Glas Tulaichean to the summit (5 hrs 15).

Descent down the ridge and picked up the new(ish) hill track that returns to the base of Creag Dallaig then back down the glen to the Spittle. A great day out: hard with with difficult snow and ice in several places. Total time 7 hrs

Looks like you had some brilliant weather . I did the graham, Carn a'ghille chearr beside Cromdale yesterday and there was some pretty deep powdery snow over thick heather in places which made it a bit tiring on the way up, but was good for coming down. Well done for managing the three munros in the short winter days
