A fine bright November day, the hills are a calling, just a wee local one Creigh Hill, which is to the East of the Backwater Resservoir, just beyond the Loch of Lintrathen beyond Kirriemuir and not far from Peel Farm coffee shop restaurant. The plan was to climb Creigh Hill and then drive about three miles for a hot soup and then head on up Mile Hill about another three miles to the NE, Well that was the plan!

We took the B951 to Dykend and turned right at the marked junction to Backwater Resservoir, went a mile up the road crossed over the dam and parked our car a further 2k at an official marked car park. The start of the walk is a few yards South of the car park by a metal gate
2.JPG
From the gate there is a track which takes you North East take this track as it's easier than walking through the rouch heather on either side
3.JPG
There are many signs of where trees have been growing, now no longer.
4.JPG
Further up the track there is a small path on the right, take it and traverse around to head for the col, picking up paths en route until you finally pick up a track again
5.JPG
Backwater Resservoire with Alyth Hill windfarm in the distance, Ahhhhhhh

We head up this way to the Right or South to the summit ridge

Looking East over Cat Law a Graham at 668m

Head on up following the fence line, it takes a kink to the right, follow to the summit
11.JPG
Looking to the South top, same height as the summit and again the Wind Farm in the distance

Returning the way we came

After travelling to Peel Farm for a lovely hot bowl of Bacon and Lentil soup, we headed up the road to where I thought would be a good place to climb Mile Hill, after parking the car beside a roadside cottage I headed up the track, so far so good
19.JPG
Angus Farmers at their best again, after climbing the gate and finding all other gates to this field open, I just kept going keeping my eyes peeled. I crossed into another couple of fields and started climbing, but soon realised that the field I was in was entirely enclosed with barbed wire fencing with and electric fence on top, I went ona little further, then decided I'll try again another day another access point, the better half was pleased to see me earlier than later so someone was happy!

Thanks for posting this walk.

I've done Cairn Daunie & Bad Buidhe in Glen Damff to the north of Backwater but I wasn't even aware of this hill and it's nice and local so one that can be done when time is short. OS map out in front of me just now to check it out.

Shame about Mile Hill!!

Hi Gordie12, it's a very short climb, very easy up and down no problems :) , bit of bone so the wet bits were holding weight :) , fine for a short day or nipping up in a morning and maybe taking something else on as well. I might try Mile hill from Auldallan in the North just East of Balintore Castle next time, or if you do it before me post a report, I started from a cottage on the B951 at grid ref 304553

Good info on two little ones in Angus that I'd like to do next year some time. Creigh Hill looks like it offers easy enough access but I did wonder about Mile Hill. Like you say, Angus farmers!

Well Graeme, you know all about Angus farmers, don't you! , Hope to be able to tackle Mile Hill again sometime before you head up that way, as it would help if you did both on the same day as there is nothing to them at all. Will report as and when I manage to find an accessible entry point :) .

RTC wrote:As I'm having to go travel a lot between Stirling and Broughty Ferry at the moment I'm on the lookout for smaller hills to take in on the way up or down. Your report brought Creigh Hill to my attention. Thanks. Managed to squeeze it in today on the way up from Stirling, following your directions. However, walked right past the [very large] cairn on the north top and didn't realise my mistake until I reached the south top. I'm putting this down to either senility, stupidity or both.

Hi RTC, pity about the oversight, guess the head was down and you could not believe how easy it all was :) . It happens to us all, I along with 4 others passed by an open cast mine on the two corbetts North of Grandtully, without noticing, unbelievable! :o Suggest Badandun hill next if you have not already done it, see my report, very easy and a track all the way to the top if the cloud is down, no bother finding the trig point. I'm hoping to do a few Grahams and Marilyns in Glen Isla so watch this site for futher reports. Might bump into you on the hill one of these days!, if I see you
