We set off on our drive from Forfar to Arrochar to walk the Cobbler back in June and the weather was just right , just a few cloulds in the sky with the sun shining down nice and dry ( was it really the second wettest year on record , OH YES ) . Arrived at the car park at the start of the walk , had a coffee and sandwich and then set off making our way through the wooded slopes gradually removing clothing as the sun beat down ( a rare thing this summer) . As we stopped to take something off the midges desended on us , it was going to be that type of day.As we made our way up with sweat dripping in out eyes , we turned to take in the glorious veiws not delaying too long because of those tiny blood suckers. Once out of the woods a slight breeze picked up making us feel more comfitable and as we followed the burn up we could see the Cobbler inviting us on.Passed the boulders and tooked the route straight up . Its strange how people tend to follow others , all those in front of us took the path to the right to go up from the back , but as soon as we took the more direct route everyone behind us followed suit. We walked/scrambled up and then stopped about half way up for a bite to eat and on reflection it was the right decision. After about fifteen minutes we continued up and as we neared the top we noticed something strange , all those coming down were either wearing hooded tops or had their fleeces over their heads even though it was very humid. We didn`t have to wait too long to realise why , as we were suddenly confronted by what I can only describe as a wall of midges , I do not think that I have ever seen so many in all my life , and by the time we reached the summit we were absolutely covered in them. Ian`s face and head (one of our pals) were almost black and we encouraged him to wipe them off as quick as possible . Unfortunately one of our group just allowed them to settle on her and boy you should have seen those lumps on her face and neck a couple of days later. I think the warm air or thermals must have lifted them to top of the hills , much to the annoyance of all the walkers. We stayed up there for about ten minutes swiping midges while some threaded the needle. The weather had by now become overcast and to our joy it started to rain ( never beem so pleased to see rain0 dispersing those tiny blighters. The rain poured down for about half an hour and then stopped as we just meanered our way back to the car park taking in the great countryside . On the way home we stopped at Perth for a meal in Pacos , perfect end to a good day.
