After cutting short my walk in Glen Isla following Meall Mor I was back in Forfar with plenty daylight left.
Turin Hill had been on my mind for weeks now following GraemeD's report and then The Rodmiester's report on his northern approach a few days ago gave me an alternative route avoiding (hopefully) the badlands of the south (see GraemeD's report).
To avoid any conflict I had considered an evening approach armed only with a head torch but in the end decided that a miserable misty day was probably as good an opportunity as any to get the job done.
Being a coward I opted for the northern approach parking the car on the B9134 Forfar - Brechin road to the northwest of Turin Hill where there is space for a couple of cars.
- Turin Hill somewhere in the mist
I entered a field yet to be ploughed following harvesting so a nice easy walk up the side of the field to quickly put some distance between me and the road.
- Heading straight for the trees in the distance
Once at the top of the field there is a fairly low fence which is easy to climb over followed by an area of scrub land with a couple of small pools to split on the way to the next field.
- One of the small pools
Once over another low fence I then followed the side of the field straight up the hill rather than crossing the field diagonally (using the tree cover rather than being spotted out in the open!!!!). Near the top of the field I headed east along the top of the field till I arrived at two gates about 40 yards apart).
- Muddy section!
Now on to the open hill it was just a case of finding the wall (in the mist) and following it to the summit.
- Turin Hill cairn
- Plaque on cairn
- Trig Point
I think I'm being watched.............who said there were no animals on this walk???
- Turin Coos
As with Meall Mor earlier in the day there was no view to be had due to the low cloud so no point in hanging about so I headed back down retracing my steps.
Back at the car within an hour, no conflict, no electrocution..............job done!!
