Corbetts: Beinn an Lochain, Binnein an Fhidhleir
Date: Saturday 2 February 2013
Time taken: 7.5hrs (incl stops 2hrs 20mins - food, photos, warm up camera, crampons on/off, scenery gazing etc)
Distance: 14km
Ascent: 1,565m

Have been rather busy of late and showing little sign of change resulting in very few if any chances of getting out but a brief window appeared last Saturday. Late night on Friday so wasn’t up as early as usual on Saturday. Drove up to the Rest and be thankful and parked in the lay-by at the roadside for Beinn an Lochain.

Got over the wee burn from Loch Restil then followed the track up on to the start of the ridge.

Further up the going got a wee bit trickier in places with some traversing across steep snowy slopes and a wee ridge. Kicking steps worked for a while but eventually gave up and donned the crampons.

Weather still quite clear allowing me to see further afield

Over to the west

Image17 -BaL&BaF 2feb2013 by rockhopper63, on Flickr

Then retraced my steps and headed back downwards. Looked quite a bit steeper going down than going up.

Image18 -BaL&BaF 2feb2013 by rockhopper63, on Flickr

Still clear further down

Image19 -BaL&BaF 2feb2013 by rockhopper63, on Flickr

Got back to the car – still only midday and plenty of light left so drove down to the Butterbridge car park. Had some food and decided then to head off for Binnein an Fhidhleir.

Walked along the road to the start of the normal northwards approach. Very boggy early on before firming up higher up the hillside.

More views of surrounding hills

With hindsight, think I headed too far to the right when going through the second set of crags. Got very steep in places and, once again, getting harder to kick steps so crampons on again. Did feel a bit exposed at one point but got up to Stob Coire Creagach.

Image28 -BaL&BaF 2feb2013 by rockhopper63, on Flickr

Binnein an Fhidhleir looked rather far away but set off towards it. Weather not so good now, cold wind and occasional low cloud but stayed dry.

Image30 -BaL&BaF 2feb2013 by rockhopper63, on Flickr

Got to the summit. Camera not working yet again for the umpteenth time today – had to heat it up, more condensation etc etc. Had also changed batteries several times to no avail. Got it going again eventually.

Started to head back the same way I’d ascended. However, before getting to Creag Bhrosgain could see on the map a possible way down through the two sets of crags so headed off fairly sharply southwards.

Image34 -BaL&BaF 2feb2013 by rockhopper63, on Flickr

Steep in places but not too bad.

Image35 -BaL&BaF 2feb2013 by rockhopper63, on Flickr

Views to the south and west as well as some deer as I headed downwards.

Got back to the car, changed and headed off home. Great to be back out after such a long couple of months.

How fantastic to get out again! I'll have to wait a few more months... You certainly made the most of the day, bagging two, albeit Corbetts  Well done!

Brilliant Rockhopper, you certainly made the most of the opportunity to get back out there, stunning photos (glad you stuck with the camera fixing/warming rather than lobbing it over a cliff in anger  ) Lovely stuff, great to see you back

I've often heard it said that Beinn an Lochain is a classic winter hill, and you can see why from this report. I've let it get away over the last several winters, but might just get a chance to squeeze it in later this month. Another great report RH and good to see you back out there doing your stuff! :D
