This was a walk with the guys that I'm doing the Caledonian Challenge with, they all opted for a slightly longer walk this week as part of our training regime so the Pentlands Ridge was the obvious choice. The start point was the car park near the visitor centre at Harlaw supposedly at 08.00 but Hamish and I were the only ones there at 08.00 by the time the rest turned up and they got themselves ready it was more like twenty past. Followed the track south east from the car park towards Glencorse Reservoir, the sun was shining and for the first time in months my hat and gloves remained in my pack. We made reasonable time across to the road at Glencorse, nothing too quick for the learners; followed the road around to the left and then picked up the track beneath the dam past the old filter beds. This is where the pace began to slow down as some of the guys aren't too good at climbing hillls !!! From here we crossed the burn and started the climb up to the top of Turnhouse. From here it was a case of following the ridge to first Carnethy then Scald law, East Kip and finally West Kip. From West Kip we headed to Bavelaw around Harlaw and Threpmuir reservoir and back to the Harlaw visitor centre. This walk was only just over 12 miles but it took us getting on for 6 hours; the boys will have to up their pace considerably if they are to complete the Caledonian challenge in reasonable time.
