Parked just over the bridge at Invergaunan where there is room for about 4 or 5 cars. Followed a good track through the forestry, eventually coming to a large gate. Passed through this and carried along the track (I should probably headed onto the hillside at this point). After about 500m or so I took to the steep slopes. Above I could see the rocky spine I'd read about, at first glance I thought it was snow
Soon I came to a deer fence which had a gate just to my left, so passed through this and carried on upwards, taking a line towards the rocks above. From here you get a nice glimps of Stob Ghabhar to the North.
- Good path
- First view of the rock spine
- Across to Beinn Bhreac-liath
- Stob Ghabhar
Eventually I reached the rock spine and followed it to its end just before a small crag, which is easily passed to the left. At this point i got my first shower, quite disappointing considering I left home with blue skies, although the further North I travelled, the more cloud there was. The showers would now blow in until the last 2km of the walk
Jacket and gloves on South towards Beinn Udlaidhs summit, passing a couple of small lochans. In between the showers there were fine views towards the Cruachan, Loch Etive and Black Mount hills. Eventually reached the summit, where there is a mast which has blown down, and what looks like the rusted remains of a trailer
Not the most attractive summit, but Ben Lui to the South sure made up for it, even if it was catching the cloud
- I passed to the left of the crag
- Rock spine from above
- views
- Cruachan over one of the lochans
- Beauty and the beast
From the summit, I headed firstly South, then East North East towards the beallach. There were a few wee rock bands to negotiate, which were easy enough, and theres a nice view down to Loch na Bi. At this point I was hit with a fairly heavy but brief snow/hail shower. At the beallach, I followed a fence uphill for a short distance then decided just to head up steeply in between two sets of small crags towards the summit. There are two small cairns pretty close to each other at the summit and a cracking view of Beinn Dorain. I didn't hang about here as there was a big black cloud chasing me!! The summit plateau extands Northwards for well over 1km with no real drop in height, though the going is ok with just small rocks and grass underfoot. At the end of the plateau you are rewarded with a fab view over the Bridge of Orchy to Loch Tulla
I then descended Northwest towards Invergaunan, but in hindsight (and after reading other reports when I got home
) it may have been better to descend steeply West from the end of the plateau and cross the Allt Ghamhnain to reach the path I'd walked in on. This would have saved me being knee deep in bog with my right leg
- Loch na Bi
- Snowing at the beallach
- Beinn Udlaidh
- Dorain from Beinn Bhreac-liath summit
- Getting chased
- Loch Tulla
- Oops!!
Another good day on the hills, and a nice drive down the rest of Glen Orchy before heading home for a couple of Bud. Good times
