I had hoped to kill two birds with one stone, watch my daughter run the Fyrish three peaks race which took them from the playing fields at Evanton through the woods onto the upper moor towards the 489m point, the first marker, then over the sub 2000er Cnoc Ceistein on towards Moultavie and up over Cnoc Fyrish and back through the woods to finish at the playing fields. I was to be taking photographs of the runners on the summit of Cnoc Ceistein and also at 597697 where they turned to access the woods again. I headed off befofe the start of the race to enable me to be on the summit for one o'clock, the race start time, this would give me time to eat my piece and have a wee drink before taking non stop photographs of the runners as they passed by the second check point. I was then to run down to 597697 to hopefully catch the leading runners.

I was following the route marked out by the organising club The Highland Hillrunners and therefore some of the routes and paths are not shown on the OS map, after a pretty hard climb through the woods using many twisting paths I soon approached the hill top moor above the trees. Marker number one was heading off to the 489 top and I headed off towards the true summit on the right

A cross on the number sees this runner given the all clear to proceed. After the hard climb through the woods which took longer than I imagined, the open hillside was pretty heathery and rough going until the summit surface one had to pick ones way over to the shorter dryer ground. On the way down you had to be careful not to fall into ditches running at funny angles across the hillside, but that was probably me traversing fast down the hillside in order to catch the first runners at the second point. The woods at the bottom was once again dictated by the paths which were marked until you came across tracks running at all different angles to eventually reach the finish line.

Fantastic - very inspiring seeing the photos, these runners are a different breed from me but it's really something to aspire to!

Hi NoviceHillrunner, take it easy at first and don't overdo it, then build up gradually, it gets easier as you get fitter, maybe run with someone slightly fitter and that will give you company and pull you out, and one day, who knows, I might be taking your picture at the Summit of Cnoc Ceislein
