Seatoller to Keswick via Dale Head & Robinson
This is a linear of 19km with ascent of 950m. The buses run from Keswick bus station (Booths supermarket). From the terminus at Seatoller it’s up hill to the Honister Quarries. Located at the head of the Honister Pass in the centre of the Lake District, here they produce the world famous Westmorland Green slate a beautiful, functional material that has been extracted here for centuries
the slate is 400 Million years old!
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can see the mines at first hand by taking a underground tour or try out the new Via Ferrata. To contact visit [b][b]www.honister.com
From the quarries it’s up on to the tops. Dale Head is soon reached, and what a view from the large cairn. Onward over the head of Hindscarth and on to Robinson, from the summit of Robinson we head off downhill to the Newlands valley.
The exact date of the origin of Newlands Church is not known, it is believed to be some time in the mid 16th century In 1731 the church had its first Curate when Joseph Fisher was appointed. Around this time Newlands church was one of the poorer clergy with an annual stipend of £2 11s 7d, before 1731 the services where run by Lay Readers.
From Newlands we pass through Little Town, Skelgill and Portinscale to day’s end at Keswick bus station
