Went back down to the Ettrick Hills this weekend, after our last trip down there we wanted to go back and spend the night in the bothy, neither of us had stopped in a bothy overnight so it was a new experience, we parked over the bridge at Shortwoodend and made our way up over Capel Fell down to Ettrick Head then on to Over Phawhope bothy, we were the only residents for the night apart from the mice, didn't sleep to well at all. We had planned to do Croft Head on the way back but a combination of being knackered and one of my toe nails hanging of my big toe we gave it a miss and went back the way we walked in, so thats one for another day soon.

Looks like my kinda winter walking! What's the strange fire in the bothy? Is it a kind of range or something? Did it put out much heat?

From the title, I thought you'd got on the wrong page for your post - Capel Fell sounds Welsh!

Hi MC, it was an old cooking range, once the fire got going it was fairly warm, temperature inside during the night was 7 degrees, outside was -3.
