Had a fantastic day climbing Ben Lomond on Monday. First time on Ben Lomond in long time, but probably the 20th time I have been up.
Warm and still from the car park. Climbed up the usual tourist route and stopped for a rest and for some warmer clothes at the snowline. The snow on the final slope and summit ridge was perfect, but still swapped poles for the axe when I realised the consequences of a fall were bad.
Met several older climbers on the route, several who had come over the Ptarmigan route.
The summit was cool and still, and I was buzzed by the Rescue chopper from Gannet, low and loud 30m over the summit...Great views all round as the low cloud had cleared by then abd the sun was showing.
A short lunch then crampons on for the steep descent off the Ptarmigan side of the summit. All the boulders/steps were covered by the snow which was firm but spring like in places...
A long descent down the ridges and tops of the Ptarmigan took me back to the car park and the end of another day out.
