We started the walk from Mabie Farm Park and took the track alongside the farm, passing a house before coming to a marker sign and a gate. You can go through the gate from here but we turned right through the woods. There are various walk / cycle routes in this Forest with tracks and routes going in various directions. We followed the red route before taking a cycle route up towards Marthrown Hill, not recommended if it's busy with cyclists. We were on this before we left it for a fainter track which headed directly upwards. We'd decided to find the trigpoint and then head to Woodhead Hill from there. This was easier said than done due to the dense forestry as we missed the trig at first before returning after we started to go downhill. We eventually found the trig and could see Woodhead Hill from it. Woodhead had been the victim of logging and we could see what looked like the highpoint just where the logging had ended, so made our way over. We then headed up the muddy track but once up it was difficult to see if we were on the summit so we had a we search through the fallen trees but there was no route through. We then made our way back down to the track which we followed round before heading up a cycle route, taking another left to another path which led us to where we had previously been. It was now we came to the conclusion that the summit had been obliterated by logging. We now headed back down the path and decided to head for a wall we had seen previously which we followed to its highpoint before making our way into the forest. We found no cairn here either but this bit was lower than the felling area so we had lunch and then took the track back down to the farm still unsure if we had summited but taking the blue balloon for our efforts.

Not another Marilyn changed beyond recognition since I did it.

This is what we think the summit looked like in January 2011. The reading was right, but it did occurr to us that the trees could have interfered with it. We tramped around getting wet and looking for anything else. I am sure it wasn't on the wall. WE did a shorter route from the A711

Below was another candidate, but no cairn

Strange how some trig points are on the summit and others are are not wonder what the thinking behind it was. i had to plough through some dreadful stuff to get to the trig on hill of fare which of course is not even near the true summit ????. Looks a bit oh a bog fest as well JC.

there seems to be loads a tree felling going on across the whole country hope it is not clearing more hills for wind turbines. i did a quick search on Google and found this article.

Millions of trees have been chopped down to clear the way for wind farms in Scotland’s countryside since Alex Salmond came to power, according to official figures published.
The Forestry Commission has disclosed that more than 6,200 acres (2,510 hectares) of trees north of the Border have been felled to allow the construction of wind farms since 2007.
With the commission estimating that on average 810 trees are planted per acre, this is the equivalent of more than five million being chopped down.
Over the same period, fewer than 2,000 acres of trees have been replanted within wind farm sites. This means there has been net loss of around 3.4 million trees to make way for turbines.

Not your most inspiring wander JC but interesting all the same, I've never considered not being able to find a summit, I had difficulty finding a trail last summer thanks to loggers but a summit is another thing altogether  That photo of the mud bath around the logging area does little to endear me to this little lump either, but what the hell, you've been, you've seen and you've conquered .........well probably
