I had just moved back to Scotland after nearly 10 years in Amsterdam. I was determined to use the good weather and hills to keep fit, so started on something "easy" with one of my best friends in the hope that I could cajole him into having as much passion for hillwalking as I did, but I think you really need to live in the flattest country in the world for a wee while to really appreciate it.

Cairn table is close to where I grew up but I'd never climbed it as fas as I know - there were lots of country walks when we were kids. We took my friend's dog up the hill which was pleasure, because I'd left a walk-loving dog back in Amsterdam. Despite it being the height of summer it was a pretty boggy trek.
