My first Corbett - Broad Law

Wanted to do two things today - practice the skills learnt on my MCoS Mountain Navigation Course, and climb my first Corbett. Did both, although I could have picked a trickier route needing more navigation - basically on Broad Law you follow the fence all the way up! Easy path to follow in most places too, although boggy under foot and a bit indistinct in parts.

Started from the Megget Stone

and followed the fence! Early parts of the route steepish at times up Fans Law but easy walking mainly. Some great views as you gain height.

I took a diversion to the Shepherd's Cairn off to the side of Cairns Law and had a break enjoying the views.

Then its fairly easy going on a fairly gentle slope up to the trig point and the cairn - oh and the alien spaceship that landed a while back :D

Its really an important NATS radio beacon, as indicated by the constant stream of planes flying overhead!

Sometime I will do the other route up - the track that they use to get up to the beacon from the North side.

The return leg uses the same route down, but the views are better.

The road to the Megget Stone is a great wee track - super views over the Talla Reservoir on the way back.

So first Corbett done - first Munro soon I hope. Onwards and upwards!! :D

Ha ... I had know idea the beacon was sooo close to the summit. When I was up there I could barely see anything through the clag. It's weird seeing how close I was to it without knowing. Although in fairness, I had deliberately chosen Broad Law because of the weather conditions and the fence that could be used for navigation.

Thanks for posting and congratz on your first corbett
