In the Big Country of the Monadh Ruaidh
Posted: Mon Sep 01, 2014 9:59 pmThe Monadh Ruaidh will always be "An Dúthaich Iarmailt Mor " or " the big sky country" to me , a place of featureless plateaux at times but always that feeling of openness above you.
I decided to clear up the summits I had left and planned a route from Boinnach Mor (No Y in the Gaelic alphabet
)
through to Beinn a Chaorainn ,a total of 42km take or leave it and ascent ? ... no sure
Set off up the "windy ridge" , cut NE over Cnap Coire na Spreidhe and down into Sra Neithich (again no Y in the Gaelic Alphabet )
Rough descent , then directly up onto the Big Hat dumping my 17K rucksack to the East of A 'Choinneach
An interesting hill this and aye the big cap perfectly describes its strange Tórran.
We then struck South to the Ath Fhionn which was fairly fast but still able to wade with care
and then up the slope to the summit of Beinn a Chaorainn which makes a surprising good viewpoint
A long way to Beinn Bhreac and a fair búrrach of a swamp in the middle of the plateau so I bore East a bit to avoid the worst of the wet .
At this point thinking of a place to camp so over to Beinn Bhreac and an eye out for a sheltered spot out the wind and beside water ,wasn't seeing any so off up to Beinn Bhreac

Bha an t side a fas sgothaich an drasda .... weather was clouding over now so we dropped into Ghlinne Doire and out the wind which was laider and found a spot beside the burn with enough wind to keep the Meanbh Chuileagan at bay
The rain stayed off till during the night but light and a comfy spot , very quiet
Suas aig Seachd uairean ..... up and away at 7am ,midgies were bad but they don't have the bite of their Western cousins
Headed off up onto Loch Etcheachan past the hut and dumped the rucksack with Doire Carn Gorm first .......
Some craicing light this morning and good Autumn colors with a hint of Winter in the wind ! . We then dropped back down and then up the steep path to Beinn Mheadhoin leaving the rucksack at the bottom
I think this is my favourite in the Monadh Ruaidh , plenty character
Spent a wee while on the mulaich here tis a wee bit what I would imagine Arizona and Texas to be like and aye definetly my favourite in the range .
We walked out via Loch A'an another beautiful spot and a favourite for An Cu with a wee swim in order
We exited over the Coire Raibeart and back down to the Cp at the foot of Carn Gorm , sore of foot and with about 40km behind us and a lot of ascent / descent .
I'm finished with the Monadh Ruaidh for now but a visit back to Loch A'an and Eteachan areas is on the cards in the future .............. hopefully as a citizen of an Independent Scotland .
