Surely one of the most rewarding of Scotland's small hills, Benarty Hill takes well under an hour to climb but the views are fantastic. When we headed up on the 15th most of the snow from earlier in the week had melted, but the ground was still frozen which helped for the few muddy sections.
From the car park the steps start immediately:
Blue skies:
Views south to Ballingry:
East to the Lomonds:
West towards the Ochils:
A boulder on a grassy knoll seemingly marks the summit, and indeed it has the best southerly views:
However, the path continues for a few hundred metres to a slightly higher summit complete with trig point, just beyond which the jewel in the panorama is revealed: Loch Leven.
Trig point:
Ochils:
Once back at the trees, a few alternative paths branch off so it may be possible to vary the return route, but we used the outward path, enjoying the views again.
Winter conditions in the Highlands and no winter equipment? Snowstorms or gales? Or just feel like an easy day? Benarty Hill might just be the hill for you...
