High camp in the Cairngorms; Day 1

Having just been shown how to re-size images, I've decided to give a trip report a go A 2 day walk into the Cairngorms was our plan, and with the weather forecast looking good, we set off for the Linn of Dee. We set off up Glen Lui with the afternoon sun beating down.

The big tops soon came into view.

It was easy walking and the views were great.

. We soon arrived at Derry Lodge.

We headed west following the Luibeg Burn and arrived at the Luibeg Bridge, we gave us a glimpse of Derry Cairngorm in the background.

Pushing on, our destination for tomorrow appeared, Carn Cloich-mhuilin and Beinn Bhrotain.

Following the path below Carn a Mhaim, todays goal appeared and what a view this is.

It just got better as we approached, with the Devil's Point, Cairn Toul and part of Braeriach on show.

We stopped for some food at the bridge near Corrour Bothy and bathed our feet in the Dee, in readiness for the climb up to the Devil's Point.

. Passed the bothy, we began the ascent of Choire Odhar.

This was much easier than it looked and we were soon at the bealach, ready to top the first Munro of the day.

Lairig Ghru & Macdui

On the climb up, we were busy watching a pair of Ptarmigan, when just to make things better, a pair of Golden Eagles came flying over There are superb views from the Point, including the Dee and Geusachan Burn.

Beinn Bhrotain

We quickly made our way off the Point, and began the ascent of Stob Coire an t-Saighdeir as the cloud gathered, but it still allowed some sun to highlight the Point and Ben Macdui.

Quite a boulder climb this one and it slowed our progress somewhat

With no time to waste, we headed on to Cairn Toul

Angel's Peak & Braeriach

We sat at Cairn Toul top for a break, watching Snow Buntings hop around near us, showing little fear then we made our way to Sgor an Lochan Uaine.

Light was beginning to go as we made our way from the Peak, finally getting to see the Falls of Dee en route.

Views back to the Peak and Cairn Toul were still ok

Our intention was to top Braeriach, but with light fading, we decided to pitch up at the Wells of Dee and start again tomorrow

The cloud stayed high and the wind stayed low, so it was easy to pitch up and get some rest.

Really enjoyable and useful set of pics, that give a really good impression of the route. I always thought (from pictures) that the Cairngorm hills looked a bit dull, but I'm really beginning to warm to them. Might try an expedition this year...

PS I see from the next report that you traced the same way back - were you not tempted to take in the hills to the North East or South West on the way back??

it certainly is onsen!! Alte, if you look a bit closer at the map, you will see we went over Beinn Bhrotain and Monadh Mor back to the car haha. Your initial thoughts of the Cairngorms being dull was similar to what I thought, but having been there, I will certainly be heading back too see the rest
