Glen Orchy Corbetts a fine high level traverse
Posted: Mon May 04, 2015 10:24 pmThis was to be the club's Skye Meet, but because of the weather forecast for the Sunday was given a last minute swerve over a pint at the Sundowner pub in Dunoon after the club's AGM finished. The three of us arrived at the starting point in Glen Orchy after pitching our tents at the excellent and well run and good value 'Pine Trees leisure Park' at Tyndrum, and were ready to start on the B8074 near Invergaunan at the bridge by 1340hrs
:
- At the start of the walk, atrack takes you through the trees and passed an old stone sheep pen on your left then take a left fork towards the Allt Ghamhnain
- Walking the track alongside the river
- After you come out of the forestry area you find a deer fence with both pedestrian gate and a vehicular gate which is locked. We passed through the pedestrian gate assuming the estate would want walkers to go this way
- We climbed up alongside the fenceline which was to take a right angled turn to head off towards the bealach South, this section is probably the steepest gradient of the day. We also assumed that there would be another gate in the fence heading in this direction, but no, as far as we could see, nothing! with us heading further South and nearer the crags and steep sided East side of Beinn Udlaidh, we had to climb over. Would it not have been a lot cheaper and easier for the estate just to have a small sign before the first fence directing walkers along the other side of the fence we walked alongside?
- No gate or access steps, found one much later on situated on the bealach between the Corbetts
- Looking up to the North East ridge, a rocky section then a snow laden section higher up

- Looking North towards the Etive and Glen Coe hills
- Approaching the summit cairn, the large one not being the summit, there is a rock with some small rocks further South which is the actual summit, easily missed if the visibility is poor, you have been warned. Ben Lui on the right

- To continue to Beinn Bhreac-liath, you have to walk near 1/2k South East then East to clear the crags and cliffs on the East side before heading to the bealach where there are small lochans and of course a deer fence with steps
- Looking South East from the ridge towards Lochan na Bi and the A85, and Tyndrum, Ben More
- The pull up from the bealach to the next summit is fairly easy, this hill has two small cairns very close together, not sure which is the actual top but went to both anyway
- A long summit ridge mostly on mossy grass with some stones, view of the ridge of Beinn Udlaidh

- The empty house at Invergaunan which we passed to get back to the roadside and car. The North ridge seems to go on and on and is slightly steeper than it looked when climbing the other Corbett
Weather looked good.
A graet wee campsite will definately go back and also a good pint at the Tyndrum Inn followed by a recommended Chip shop Chicken Currie and Chips at the Good food Place, just what the doctor ordered 
Think I will maybe go back to the Pine Trees camp after a Compleation Day for a club member on Sunday the 7th June, fancy it?
