Ben Challum at the second attempt

Second attempt at Ben Challum – this time on a very very fine day. (Last time, in February, I was beaten by the snow & ice.) Indeed I shouldn’t have worn shorts, for the back of my calves were a bit burnt by the end of the day. My friend and companion Lee had the good sense to apply sun bloc!
The route started at Auchtertyre and took us up Gleann a’ Clachain and then east to the Beallach Ghlas Leathaid followed by an easy wee scramble to the top of Ben Challum. I could see more challenging scrambles to my left – I may go up again to try it out. From the summit a short but nice ridge walk to the southern top thence off the hill southwards to Kirkton Farm.
Shortly before the shielings at the foot of Gleann a’ Clachain we abandoned the path and from there to the north side of the Ben was heavy going in long grass and spongy moss. Never the less it was a grand day out; easy but enjoyable scrambling, great views from the top including Ben Nevis and a nice cool pint in the Drover’s on the way home.
