Broad Law revisited with bonus' attached.
Posted: Tue Jul 21, 2015 10:49 amBroad Law was one of those hills we felt we had to re-visit in better weather after being forced into a hasty retreat off it last March due to wind, rain and fog.
We had a reasonable forecast for our planned weekend so decided to travel from our digs in Carlisle and do the Broad Law to Dollar Law and back walk from the Megget Stone.
We didn't want to finish the day with a section of road walking so decided to retrace our outward route back to the car.
Knowing there was limited parking at the start of the walk we set off in good time to bag a good spot to park up, on arrival there were no other cars so managed to get the prime spot by the stone and with the sun out it gave a feeling that things would work in our favour today.
We followed the WH route and the fence to the trig pillar on Broad Law and, from there, in total contrast to our visit in March, we could see the whole route ahead.
Cramault Craig was the next objective with a reasonable descent and re-ascent in between, thinking it would be a longish walk over it turned out to be a very enjoyable walk taking just 45 mins from summit to summit which surprised us, distances are deceiving in the Southern uplands and on this walk you can see the fence as it shows the way forward and it helps to give a sense of scale.
From the summit we could see Dollar Law away in the distance and the undulating landscape in between.
We set off following the fence heading for Dun Law over easy enjoyable grass and heather.
From Dun Law, Fifescar Knowe is next. About 400m before the summit of Fifescar Knowe a dry stone wall joins the fence and stays with it all the way to Dollar Law's trig pillar.
We arrived on Dollar Law after a really enjoyable walk, took a few photos had lunch spent a while looking at the views and seeing some ominous looking rain clouds heading our way we decided to set off retracing our route back to the car.
The rain didn't bother us, we got a few spits and spots but everywhere stayed clear of cloud and we stayed dry throughout.
This is a nice walk and taken at a steady pace can be done with little effort, the weather was good for us this time but if the clag threatens the fence acts as a bulletproof navigational aid so can be a good day out either way.
