Walkhighlands

Today was forecasted for the best weather of the week so with the Grandkids up from the South it was time to add to their Munro tally. As they had insufficient baggage room to pack their walking boots Mount Keen with a track and good path to the summit was to be the chosen hill. Glen Esk was chosen as the starting point to save a drive around to the North side.

A happy group at the Car Park at the West end of Glen Esk

After leaving the car parl turn righr along the tarmac road over a bridge and soon to find a directional sign on your right

After passing through a metal gate it was a straightforward walk along the water filled track up the glen

The heather was in full bloom

First of three burn crossings this being the easiest

Its fast walking along this almost level track

On your right if your alert you will find this marker stone on your right

Passing a tree plantation on your right

The Queens Well comes into view after the tree plantation and before the now used Holiday Cottage which was empty when we passed

On the track outside the Estate House now used for Holiday lets

The most difficult river crossing you will find but unless it's after a prolonged spell of wet weather should provide no problems. It was here that James on his mountain bike overtook us splashing through the burn

Looking back down the track

Time for a drink at the sharp bend in the track

Time for a wee rest

Looking back down the glen from the track at high level before the cairn marking the junction of the well made up path to the summit

The summit in the distance taken fro0m the large cairn at the trackside

Abbey at the summit trig point

Boundary marker stone near the summit

Met up with James again at the summit

Returning down the track

House of Mark, now a B and B and Coffee /Tea stop off after your days exersions

Tea/Coffee on the lawn in a wonderful setting, and the sun shining for once this Summer

Mount Keen is on my list of the Munros I want to do with my daughter Cheyenne soon

Happy to see how is it there now

It was a fine day and Mount Keen certainly expected by expectations with great views over to Lochnagar and the Aberdeenshire coast! I hope you and your family all enjoyed it and I made it back safely! - Thanks for the summit photo!

Hi James, we all really enjoyed our day, we picked well for the weather. It was an action all go week as you can imagine.

May see you up another hill sometime

Glen Esk looks nice time of the year, with heather in bloom everywhere

We did MK from the other side also in August, two years ago, I think it was, and Glen Tanar was a sea of purple. We actually enjoyed the walk-in more than the climb itself :lol:

For us, the Esk approach is the inconvenient one (too far to drive).

I miss the hills already and thinking about another month without them... :sick:

He did feel completely left out so Abbey took him out for a ride to the farm shop to get some strawberries the next day to make up. Tell you this there would have been a lot of ooooohs and aaaaaahs and probably been a few crash bang wollups as well as some parts were very stoney :lol:

We were very lucky with the day Mountainlove, there have been very few good hill days this Summer, so it was nice for the family to enjoy. In fact they had not a bad week full stop with only one rainy day which we went to the swimming pool.
