Having been discouraged on a previous occasion by the 'No parking' signs, I did some homework then emailed Highland Water Works. A prompt reply assured me it would be ok to park at the roadside on the Saturday or Sunday. However - having parked there and then chatting to a local couple, they told me the parking area was nothing to do with the HEP scheme under construction, and that the signs had been put up by the landowner. I now realise the (parking) area is for access to a loading bay from sheep pens in the adjacent field.
- Tyre marks suggest the loading bay is occasionally in use.
Maybe it would be better to park nearer the gate for the construction traffic and leave the loading bay clear? I'm not sure what the legality is of an individual restricting parking on what looks like the verge ...............
The other possible parking (by the tennis court) was occupied by a tractor.
The walk itself was very pleasant. The track passes the HEP works and then through Gleann a' Chilleine. Considering the weather was so good, if a bit hazy, I was surprised to meet only one small group of walkers. Eventually a right fork leads up on to the southern slopes of The Shee, and the summit is soon reached.
- Not much a view from the top today - heat haze!
I enjoyed this way up - it gave an opportunity to look down on to the black ribs of peat hags crossing the ridge below, although that didn't actually help navigate through them. Thankfully dry on this walk.
- Quite spectacular chasm, just east of the main ridge
I didn't enjoy the walk down - the steep slopes down towards Claggan Farm made my going cautiously slow, but looking at the contours, it's steep however you decide to come off. A good day out.
