Parked at screel hill car park, walked up the main track to a gate on the left hand side.
Passed through the gate and followed the track through an open field, the track is marked on the os map and turns at a right angle before exiting the field at another gate (right beside the cow feeding station - lots of cows which had to be passed closely but they were very timid even towards dogs).
After through the gate the track climbs gently for a mile or so, a bit further than shown on the os map.
Eventually reached a turning area. There is a rough pathway at the back of this area to the left, which descends through a kissing gate, across the burn then climbs up past a ruined building and onto the open hill. Its a fairly distinct lath in the winter but might become a bit harder to spot in summer.
The final few hundred metres the path peters out every so often and its easy to find yourself clambering through deep heather, but nothing to difficult and once on the summit the views were fantastic, could make out a lot of the hills in the lake district, coserine and the merrick were clear to the north and the moffat hills too.
Went back the same way but it looked quite feasible to fight your way over to screel hill to make a circular route.
