Meall a' Phubuill crisp snow and blue sky
Posted: Sun Jan 10, 2016 4:37 pmAfter over a week of constant rain and with many roads closed or even washed away with flooding in the NE, I had decided enough was enough and was again heading West. Saturday was looking good said the forecasters so Friday afternoon set sail so to speak from the East side towards Drumochter up the A9 where there were no reported flooding problems through Laggan towards Glen Nevis YH where I would stay the night. After a meal in Fort Bill I returned to the YH for an intertaining evening with a couple of German Scottish Hill lovers Franz and Rudi who were on a three week tour of Scotland, lucky guys 
. Over a few drams and beers many new ideas were hatched for their holidays, hope you guys are enjoying Skye when you read this. In the morning I was up quite early and ready for Theresa when she arrived after driving up in the morning.[/attachment]

- After we walked through the first gate and past a couple of houses there is another gate to pass through before heading down what this morning was a very ice track in places towards our goal.

- It was cold and frosty but very little wind and with the brisk walking at this stage although care had to be taken when the icy sections were to be crossed
- A bit further on we were to start climbing up the fairly dry and frosted lower slopes after we had passed what is called Brian Choille on the OS map
- Still to reach the snow line on the South slopes of Druim Gleann Laoigh
- Just hitting the snow line
- Some nice icicle formations with no sign of any thaw
- Looking back at Ben Nevis in the distance. We had now reached the snow line but the depth of snow was nothing like on the Perthshire Corbett four weeks ago
- Soon we arrived at the Dry Stane Dyke which you follow to the summit of the 747m top

- From the summit of the 747m top we startled a large herd of dear which ran across the bealach below
- Following the dyke down to the bealach with Meall a' Phubuill in front of us

- Now on the summit with Ben Nevis and the 747m summit both clear

- Happy it's not a crawling job this time, with superb views all around. The reason we go hill walking really. Totally forgetting the week of rain we have had earlier
- Coming off the South East shoulder and looking up towards Glensulaig bothy
- Returning on the still icy and frosted path. Although taking nearly six hours for this walk, probably about half an hour or more could be knocked off if the track had not been so icy and proper walking pace could be attained

. Cant beat a few drinks in the hostel talking about the walks
