One of our best days ever in the hills of Coigach just north of Ullapool. After three nights away in the van, two based at the WH Gairloch Spring Meet with very special hillwalking friends, then one based at Ardmair Point just below the Coigach we were gifted with an incredibly special Monday :D :D :D :D :D
1 (1280x720) (1024x576).jpg
Approaching Coigach and Inverpolly Forest :)
3 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
Several miles round now at the road end past Achiltibuie .....
4 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
Views across the entrance to Loch Broom and southwards over to An Teallach. Our plan had been to climb up onto Ben More Coigach, but gusts of wind were unsettling us a little, particularly Valerie who was feeling less well rooted than my good hefty self LOL
5 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
The west ridge of Ben More Coigach, our original plan, but left for another day due to high gusting winds. A great reason to make a return visit :) :) :)
7 (1280x720) (1024x576).jpg
Shelter sought in this beautiful Allt nan Coisiche .... Stayed here for more than a few minutes ..... you can see why! Though when standing back up again and spinning on the spot, I knocked Valerie's phone clean out of her grip smashing it's screen on the rocks. Fortunately it was already overdue for renewal and it still worked despite a thousand cracks .... mattered not a jot really after the peace and joy experienced here in this unique sheltered stream.
8 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
The northwest facing side of Ben More Coigach ...
9 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
Very fine views across the sea with the Summer Isles patterned below .... always drawing the eye from every angle :)
11 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
Almost up now onto Sgurr an Fhidhleir, first summit of the day (originally planned as second), but anticipation growing at this point as a big reward for our efforts was still to behold despite missing out BM Coigach for another day ....
12 (1280x720) (1024x576).jpg
Wonderful vistas appear across the lochs, mountains and the sea .... :) :) :)
13 (1280x476) (1024x381).jpg
Inverpolly National Nature Reserve and the Hills of Assynt :) :) :)
14 (1280x451) (1024x361).jpg
A summit platform or stage if ever there was one ... so deserving of a return trip or two :)
15 (1280x764) (1024x611).jpg
The glorious northwest of Scotland!!!
16 (1280x720) (1024x576).jpg
The howling gusts even relaxed for us here, though great care was required with securing possessions and selfs ...
17 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
Feeling "no bad", to put it lightly :) :) :)
19 (1280x720) (1024x576).jpg
Wondrous Stac Pollaidh and Mighty Suilven !!!
20 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
One of the world's most amazing playgrounds :)
22 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
A glance backwards (one of many) to where we had been, Sgurr an Fhidhleir :)
23 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
Valerie definitely enjoying her day out, now on top of Beinn Caorach :) :) :)
25 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
26 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
The ferry returning from Stornoway in to Loch Broom and Ullapool :)
28 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
Careful dropping off now to where Hector was parked in Culnacraig.
30 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
Final small challenges of a spectacular day :)
31 (1280x960) (1024x768).jpg
On the road home now for the night, looking again at Sgurr an Fhidhleir standing proud towards its east side. We were soon enjoying a fireside bar meal and a special treat staying in a lovely wee B&B harbour side in Ullapool :)

That looks stunning, I guess beside the Allt nan Coisiche would be too wet for a wild camp Bod? And to think we are up there again in July, cannot come soon enough :D :D

Hi Rod,
Wild camping up there would be great (dooterbang has done it on the summit), as for lower on the burn, spaces are limited, but worth a look. Not obvious though, but can't wait to hear how you get on :D :D

fantastic pictures Bod, waiting for a day like you had to tackle the classic Direct Nose Route, think your last picture shows its profile perfectly.

Definitely one of the very best, not only in itself but the views it affords of Assynt are just spectacular! And you got some great pics there.

Just a pity it's such a long way to drive... :(

But I will get there! SP and Suilven - and now Sgurr na Fhidhleir - are high up the "to do" list.
