After a comfortable night at the Great Glen hostel we drove along the rollercoaster that is the Loch Arkaig road, parking up just before Strathan. A sunny morning, with little wind - a good day beckoned.
- Looking towards the back of the Glenfinnan munros from the car park
We walked along the track towards Glen Dessary, past the Jacobite barracks and took the track on the west side of the Dearg Allt (not as the map shows on the east side)
- The Jacobite barracks
Had a tea break not far up this track, where we could look at a couple of deer at fairly close range.
- Looking north west from our tea break spot
We made steady progress along this track, enjoying the developing views.
- The Glenfinnan corbetts
The track came and went a bit and once over the burn it became quite boggy. We decided to head for the bealach with Fraoch Bheinn and from there we would pick up the south west ridge to the summit.
- Fraoch Bheinn from the bealach
- Looking south west from the bealach
Gentle slopes led to the ridge and we passed a small herd of deer on the way.
- Deer as we approached the ridge
- Approaching the ridge
On the ridge we could hear ptarmigan, but no sightings.
- The summit
Wonderful views at the top - from Rum to The Ben!
- Loch Arkaig from the summit
- The head of Loch Arkaig and the Glenfinnan hills from the summit
- The Saddle with Rum in the distance
- North west from the top
- Looking over Loch Quoich to the Glen Shiel hills
We dropped back, mainly by the route of ascent, but instead of crossing the burn, we took a direct line to the car, which I think is marginally quicker
- Heading back by the direct route
- Almost at the car!
A very enjoyable day with some fantastic views.
