A clockwise circuit of the 3 Donalds with a route inspired by Rockhopper. A good track to the ruins of the abandoned Woodhead Settlement. Then a bit of cross country posting in deep tussocky grass with some boggy bits. The going is good once the slopes are reached.

Parked up of the A713 at the small layby used for Cairnsmore of Carsphairn, crossed the road and headed towards Woodhead.

From right to left ... Knockower, Coran of Portmark and Bow ( a new Donald).
Image

There is a decent track that goes all the way to the abandoned Lead Mine settlement.
Image

Reaching the old settlement, some buildings are in a better state of repair than others.
Image

But time and nature hasn't been slow in reclaiming this place.

Old chimney stacks.
Image

Strange now to think that 300 people used to live and work here.
Image

My first target in the background ... ascent of Black craig to reach Cairnsgarroch.
Image

Made my way to where the OS map shows a bridge crossing the Garryhorn Burn ...
Image

But it was safer to cross using stepping stones!
Image

Once across the burn, navigating up through Black Craig.
Image

Heading for the summit of Cairnsgarroch.

The shepherds cairn.

The view back along the garryhorn Burn with Cairnsmore of Carsphairn in the background.

Looking north to Bow.

First Donald of the day, Cairnsgarroch, with Carlin's Cairn in the background.

Corserine and Carlin's Cairn.

Ahead to the next target ... Maul.

Looking back to Cairnsgarroch.

Maul trig point, and once again featuring Corserine and Carlin's Cairn.

Loch Doon.
Image

The summit cairn on Bow, a new Donald ... or as I was thinking while wondering up ... summit 2.5
Image

Finally on the summit of Coran Portmark.

This looks like an interesting route that I might stick in the memory bank for another trip down to this part of the country - don't think I would bother with that "bridge" either!!

Did these 3 today along with Carlin's Cairn, fabulous area 8)
The walk once higher up was easy and enjoyable, found the going really tough in the thigh length tussocky grass - never walked in grass that long before
Like you I used Rockhopper's route along with yours, did it anti-clockwise

Enjoyed your report and great photo's BTW
