On any round of hills there will be some you don't end up doing justice. Loughrigg was one such fell, a hurried hour from the closest point as the rain lashed down was the summation of our efforts, good for a tick if nothing else. With the A591 finally reopened we took advantage of a fine day to have a more extensive wander round some of Loughrigg's many delights. It was quite shocking that this was the first full family Lakeland outing since we completed but it was great to back to up the hills together.

This is a very well documented corner of the Lakes with good reason, it's absolutely beautiful and so I'll let the pictures do the talking and try to get on with reports that others may find more interesting. :D

Great photos.
I do wonder, sometimes, if we miss the point of the "Wainwrights" by rushing to completion rather than savouring each one as a separate entity.

Though on reflection savouring some, whilst trudging through bogs, is an appreciation too far.

Love the dramatic skies - excellent photos as ever. Well worth the circular wander rather than just up & down by the shortest route. Don't like the look of that giant wooden mosquito though! Or the cockchafer

My very first Wainwright, which I climbed with my Dad when I was 9 years old on a beautiful day in May. We didn't know it was a 'Wainwright' then, but I'll never forget finally seeing the trig column after all the false summits Loughrigg has, despite its modest altitude. And even from way back then, I can still remember those classic views of the Langdale Pikes, Grasmere, and that tiny bit of Thirlmere peeping over Dunmail Raise.

It's a beautiful hill with some of the best scenery you'll see anywhere in Britain (we've both been to Skye, you've been to Arran and I've been to the Fisherfields, but Loughrigg's views can match anything). Great photos, Anthony. Sometimes when I see someone else's report from a hill I've been on, I think, "But you didn't post a picture of my favourite view!" But not this time. I scrolled down your report looking for those classics, and they were all there, beautifully captured!

Thank you, taking your time is almost invariably the best option, even those fells with bogs will have a best way up.

Cheers Dav the clouds were most kind on this walk. The Cockchaffer was breathing it's last so no need to lock your windows  They are a fascinating animal and also now quite rare.

The thing I like about Loughrigg is you never really say, there's Loughrigg when on another fell, gives it, in spite of it's popularity, so many secret corners and places that are unexpected. Having just been to Austria for a week I can still confirm nowhere I've been, no matter how beautiful, can quite match the unique charm of places like this.

Cheers Chris, as you can probably tell Hughie was more interested in the piece of sandwich Grace was holding than the camera

Yes, the pics certainly tell their own story (fab pics as usual    ). What a beautiful place. I didn't realise how close it is to Ambleside until I saw the map at the end.

Definitely going to spend more time in the LD once I retire...

I can think of few places better for a gentle wander, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
