Essentially this was a route that followed the ridge from just below Irton Pike up to the summit of Whin Rigg and then along to the summit of Illgill Head. I then returned the same way. Circular routes are possible, but I like ridge walks and was happy to walk this one in both directions.
Visibility was rather mixed, with cloud sitting on the higher parts of the ridge for much of the day. The time is only approximate, but I was in no hurry whatsoever.

Warning Please note that hillwalking when there is snow lying requires an ice-axe, crampons and the knowledge, experience and skill to use them correctly. Summer routes may not be viable or appropriate in winter. See winter information on our skills and safety pages for more information.
