As a regular poster of WR's in "all" weathers I feel really guilty about forcing you out in that horrible white stuff and of course cold temperatures

Brilliant report ...I had a grin on my face reading it and what amazing photos you got.
As for drying up wet boots, I usually take the insoles out and keep them on the floor on the passenger seat and turn the car into a subtropical environment. Saying that I sometimes travel with 2 pairs so I can change them in between

Thanks Sgurr. I do distinctly remember your photo of the man-penguin when it came up and it definitely gave me a very good chuckle but no it probably didn't have a great deal to do with me being here in November

Thanks Mountainlove. I'd been thinking a second pair of boots might not be a bad idea, might have to go for it then.

P.S. Never used anything other than newspaper for drying. Interesting re. crampons. Not done a lot of winter walking but I do dabble with my ancient Grivels and more like 3 season boots which works fine in the non extreme conditions I frequent. I'm prone to back problems too though so any winter walks tend to be very simple up downs and not too long.

Which Kahtoola crampons did you use? I have been looking for something like this but on their website there are two types.

KTS Steel, as I'd read the aluminium ones wear down quickly (but they're lighter). Make sure you get the right size for your boots. Somewhere on the Kahtoola website there's a video describing how to fit them which is worth a watch.

Just as an aside you can still find Instep Crampons, which are the same as the usual cramps, as in the big spikes but they are usually just 6 spikes on a small frame that sit just in front of the heel on any boot. As they don't cover the entire sole they can be worn on a flexible boot. Ive heard of the Kats but if I recall they have small spikes yes ? which may not be enough in some scenarios.

I noticed you asking about the wet boots issue. I think a spare pair is probably the best solution. Nothing worse than pulling on damp boots.
At least you have some funds now to put towards an extra pair

Good report. If you cannot get boots dry then use sealskinz socks.
