This was the seventh day of a trip supervising some lads from Kent on a D. of E. trip and the first day of their assessed expedition. We (the staff) took them to their start point at Lower Diabaig by minibus and, once they had started walking, I was let off the leash at the bridge below Coire Mhic Nobaill and free to climb Beinn Alligin. Although, in contrast to the previous day, it wasn't raining, the clag was down to around 2,500 feet and, despite the odd rent in the clouds, the views were never going to be all they might have been from such a wonderful hill.
That said, the traverse was still excellent. A scramble up Na Fasreidhnean broke up the treadmill on the ascent and, although there wasn't much to be seen from the main ridge, things did start to clear a bit on the descent from Sgurr Mor; it became possible to appreciate the big drop off to the north and some of the exposure on the scrambles over the Na Rathanan pinnacles.
In fact, once I'd dropped off the south eastern end of The Horns, the weather had begun to improve and I was able to sit in the bracken and wait for the D. of E. groups to come through below me - which, in due course, they did. I then followed them up to the lochans at the head of Coire Nobaill (near where they were planning to camp) and, having checked that all was well, I headed down to the car park at Lochan an Iasgair where we had left a vehicle.
It had been another good day on the hills.
